As the flagship wine of the Barossa, the variety of Shiraz brings high expectations in the region. With multiple medal wins and a passionate customer following, Fernfield delivers a premium example of fruit forward Eden Valley Shiraz.
The 2018 vintage maintains our tradition of bold, fruit driven Shiraz with a deeply coloured, rich wine giving aromas of blackcurrant and a smooth finish.
Truly nurtured by our family from start to finish, these vines were planted by Scott, Bec and our family in our own little hidden valley in 2013. The vineyard, rooted in some of the oldest soils in South Australia featuring a shallow slate, providing ideal drainage. Breezes flow through the valley along our little creek that feed into the Marne River ensuring good airflow undervine.
A typical winter and spring gave the vines a great start, and gave them a good grounding for the heat of summer. A mild autumn produced slow ripening with the grapes picked on the 28th of April.
The grapes were hand-picked then half was footstomped by our niece and nephew while the other half was gently crushed and destemmed. The wine was fermented on-skins for seven days before pressing. The footsomped and crushed wines were then aged separately in aged French oak barrels before blending back together and bottled in August 2020.
Our Shiraz is a deep, rich ruby colour, a balanced wine with velvety texture and mouth-coating tannins. Blackcurrant fruit and vanilla pod are dominant characters, with subtle white pepper and a smooth finish.
We love the majestic old river red gums nestled throughout our Eden Valley estate, and the great hollowed out gum depicted on the label is our favourite. This magnificent timeworn tree has witnessed hundreds of years of history and provided accommodation for both native fauna and long-distant families alike.
